Preorder 2025 Unusual Conifers & Ginkgo for Pick Up
Many local gardeners, facing damage from European Chafers to their front lawns, are replacing traditional turf with low-maintenance landscapes. Dwarf conifers have become a popular choice due to their minimal pruning requirements, unique growth habits, and vibrant foliage in colours like gold, blue, and even white. These conifers are also highly drought-tolerant once established and are generally extremely cold-hardy. As demonstrated in the image of the American Conifer Society Garden in Oregon, incorporating a variety of conifers can create a more visually interesting and dynamic landscape.
Ginkgos are actually prehistoric plants and during the Eocene period we had two species growing in the interior which have left us some stunning fossils at the McAbee site near Cache Creek. Modern Ginkgo trees or Ginkgo biloba are only a small remnant of this once widespread tree which were discovered growing around Chinese and Japanese Temples, as well as a few isolated locations in the wild. From these the species was reintroduced to the rest of the world and collectors have been propagating dwarf or variegated mutations ever since, some of which are on offer here. Expect unusual fishtail-shaped foliage, consistent golden-yellow autumn hues, excellent cold tolerance and good disease resistance. They also make great bonsai and container specimens.
