We would like to start the season by wishing you a Happy New Year and sharing some of the exciting plants that you can expect this upcoming spring from Amsterdam Garden Centre!
Our staff has been busy ordering for 2025, and we are thrilled to offer you an expanded opportunity for online purchasing, so that you can secure your favourite perennials, shrubs, vines and trees, even before they have arrived.
There will be eleven new categories to peruse and shop from including Magnolias, Hosta, Peonies, Japanese Maples (102 cultivars to choose from), Rare Perennials, Camellias, Unusual Conifers & Ginkgo and Dogwoods, among others. All these plants are coming from trusted suppliers, people we have dealt with for many years, so you can be confident that the quality will be first rate.
So, here’s a sneak peak at what is currently, or will be available shortly, for online purchase at Amsterdam Garden Centre.
‘Summer Gold’ Dogwood
Here’s a variety of Kousa dogwood that has stunning gold-variegated foliage that actually rivals the starry white blooms. It is also quite disease resistant, and the fall foliage is often an eye-catching fluorescent pink.

‘Moon of Nippon’ Peony
An understated herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora) with elegant blooms of single white petals accented by a prominent central cluster of golden-yellow petaloids. Not only is it fragrant but it also makes a great cut flower.

‘Purple Ghost’ Japanese Maple
This is my favourite member of the Ghost Family of Acer palmatum, with stunning foliage of a bright purplish-red accented by prominent darker veins. The leaves are highly serrated and its shorter, more narrow growth habit makes it ideal for smaller urban gardens.

‘Manhattan Lights’ Lupine
All the Westcountry series of Lupines are pretty spectacular, but ‘Manhattan Lights’ is truly a cut above the rest. Expect towering spires of bicolour blooms, an exciting contrast of royal purple and gold that can reach heights of 3’ on mature plants.

‘Sai no Matsuzaka’ Azalea
I have secured a good number of this very rare Rhododendron kiusianum cultivar which is much sought after by collectors and bonsai enthusiasts. You can expect unique trusses of smaller white blooms irregularly streaked in a purplish pink so that every plant is truly a surprise.

‘Dancing with Dragons’ Hosta
A Walter’s Garden introduction with a fancy name that surprisingly merits this stunning variety. You get heavily corrugated heart-shaped leaves with wavy margins and a powder-blue colour that lasts throughout the growing season.

‘Flavorette Honey-Apricot’ Rose
You will find this Proven Winners rose in our new Rugosa section, as its flowers are just as tasty as the many rugosa roses we are offering. As the name implies, it bears edible honey-apricot flavoured golden-yellow quartered blooms all summer long.

‘Sunsation’ Magnolia
An exciting variety that we are carrying for the first time, ‘Sunsation’ features very large blooms (7” across) of the brightest golden-yellow with a faint pink streak at the base of each petal. It is also quite cold hardy (USDA zone 5) and only grows about 20-25’ tall.

‘Golden Dragon’ Wisteria
Our new vine section has some real gems, but none outshine this rare wisteria with bright gold new growth that makes each raceme of white and purplish-blue flowers look like the sun is shining behind them. These are lightly scented and are followed by attractive buttery-yellow fall foliage.

'Oregon Grape'
Mahonia aquifolium is a very versatile native evergreen shrub that can be grown in open shade right up to full sun exposures. The bright yellow blooms are much appreciated by the hummingbirds and are followed by dusky blue berries that make some of the best tasting jelly available.

‘Taylor’s Sunburst’ Lodgepole Pine
An eye-catching variety of Pinus contorta with golden-yellow new growth that is nicely accented by the older green foliage. There are also tiny red cones lodged between the bright yellow new needles in spring.

So, while this ends my sneak peak at the plants that will be available in our new online categories, I would be remiss if I didn’t tempt you into a few of our more traditional plant offerings.
‘Snow Dragon’ Citrus
A new cold hardy (USDA zone 5) contorted citrus (Poncirus trifoliata) with twisted bright green thorned branches generously streaked in white. The deciduous foliage also has beautiful white margins making this variety a choice container specimen.

‘Le Borgeot’ Quince
After an absence of about 5 years we have finally secured a local grower for true tree quince, or Cydonia oblonga. We have two pear-shaped varieties available, ‘Champion’ and ‘Le Borgeot’, both of which are heavy producers once established.
